April HEFTY

HEFTY has been having a great year. In mid March, over 300 teens participated in NFTY’s regional Conclavette and enjoyed an activity packed program. At the Religious School Purim carnival, HEFTY ran the food table. We had a great time interacting with the students and selling the food (especially the cotton candy!). Much appreciation goes to Calvin Koffman, his parents, and the Board members for making this year’s fundraiser a fantastic success.

HEFTYites are really excited to attend our March Shear Madness program. We are heading into Boston to enjoy a group dinner and then move onto the Shear Madness show. As many people know, this show has been running for years and it changes every time you see it. It’s a murder mystery comedy where the audience interacts with actors. On Mar 26, Hefty hosts its annual Creative Service. This year’s theme is “L’Chaim, To Life.” All HEFTY members are encouraged to attend and participate. There will be an Oneg Shabbat after the service sponsored by the HEFTY parents. In April, we will be getting together with other area youth groups in Andover for a TYGOR event. (Temple Youth Group Outreach Retreat). It will involve educational, social action, and social programs in a one day conference involving a small number of local Temple Youth Groups. We also encourage members to come to our end of the year barbecue in May.

All of HEFTY’s ongoing programs have been a success, including the recycling and snack shack programs. Slating for next year’s Board is coming up, so anyone who is interested, please contact Trudy Zakin (youth committee chair) and/or Jesse Kamien (advisor). As always, if you have any questions, feel free to contact me, Melanie Zakin (MCVP) at mjz1021.

HEFTY is simply an acronym for the Haverhill Emanu-El Federation of Temple Youth. (Talk about a hefty mouthful!) However, don’t let the name misinterpret our wonderful youth group! We are Temple Emanu-El’s senior youth group, combining the 8th-12th graders into a family of HEFTYites. Together, we participate in monthly activities encompassing social action, education, and always a good time. High Schoolers are also eligible and encouraged to participate in Regional youth events through NFTY-NE (that’s the National Federation of Temple Youth, Northeast Region). NFTY events are great opportunities to meet other Jewish kids from New England and beyond, while participating in some of the most worthwhile programs as a member of the Jewish community. (“Glad” would have been more suitable a name while still following the trash bag theme, but that first “G” threw us off.)

The HEFTY Board does most of the work in planning and executing our events throughout the school year. Members are also more than welcome to put in a little extra time and plan events, just ask a board member!
