HEFTY (Youth Group)

SHUL-IN PICS!

  February HEFTY Bulletin Article

HEFTY had an unbelievable start to the New Year. With a board membership that is larger than the recent past and solid attendance at programs, all members have been having a great time. Our December event was a Post-Channukah party at our advisor, Jesse Kamien’s, house. We had a lot of fun cooking latkes from scratch and enjoying them along with a potluck dinner. Afterwards, we had some down time where we were able to play the fan-favorite
Apples-to-Apples and take the time to catch up with one another.
During school vacation week, NFTY-NE (of which HEFTY is a part) had their December Institute - a weeklong gathering of Jewish teens from New England and part of Canada. The theme of the week was truth and perception relating to how reform Jews - adults to teens - view life in general. It was a great week for everyone who went, and there were different activities available from “Packing for College” to “Where Does Judaism Fit In?” It was a great eye-opening week of which to be a part, and the last Institute for all of the seniors.
Our most recent event was Shul-In, which was an overnight spent at the Temple. Always one of our best attended events, Shul-In lived up to its expectations. We enjoyed playing traditional games like “Give,” “Name that Tune”, and flashlight tag. In addition, we followed this year’s theme of “Jews in Sports” by attempting to play stickball, a Jewish-founded sport. Board members presented biographical data about a chosen Jewish athlete and asked trivia questions following each presentation. Havdallah and Friendship Circle were especially meaningful. Our thanks go to the alumni who visited, Eddie Zaremba and Spencer Kaplan, and to Ilana Jacobs for helping to chaperone throughout the overnight.
Upcoming, we have our annual Shabbaton weekend in the White Mountains. This event is combined with the 7th grade Hebrew School class to give them a taste of how much fun HEFTY is. During the weekend, participants will enjoy Shabbat, sled, swim, and have a great time. We are really looking forward to this event. Purim Carnival is February 28th where Hefty will be assisting to run game booths and selling pizza, snacks and drinks. Don’t miss out on the fun!
As always, new members are welcome. Please contact Julia Martin (President) at julesm_x0 or Melanie Zakin (MCVP) at mjz1021 for any questions or comments.

HEFTY is simply an acronym for the Haverhill Emanu-El Federation of Temple Youth. (Talk about a hefty mouthful!) However, don’t let the name misinterpret our wonderful youth group! We are Temple Emanu-El’s senior youth group, combining the 8th-12th graders into a family of HEFTYites. Together, we participate in monthly activities encompassing social action, education, and always a good time. High Schoolers are also eligible and encouraged to participate in Regional youth events through NFTY-NE (that’s the National Federation of Temple Youth, Northeast Region). NFTY events are great opportunities to meet other Jewish kids from New England and beyond, while participating in some of the most worthwhile programs as a member of the Jewish community. (“Glad” would have been more suitable a name while still following the trash bag theme, but that first “G” threw us off.)

The HEFTY Board does most of the work in planning and executing our events throughout the school year. Members are also more than welcome to put in a little extra time and plan events, just ask a board member!
